There are four independent sequencers, controlling whatever synth, module, or drum machine you want. The sequencer features 16 patterns per track, and each pattern can be up to 64 steps long and contain 16 notes per step. Up to 16 patterns can chained together to create a whole song or sections of a live set. What's more, the onboard scene memory takes snapshots of all the sequences within a pattern, letting you instantly switch between sets of sequences. The Arturia Beatstep USB, MIDI, and CV Controller and Sequencer is a USB class-compliant driverless controller that enables control over DAWs, loop-triggering software, drum software, VST instruments, VST effects, DJ applications, MIDI instruments, and analog equipment that has control voltage (CV) connections. The unit features sixteen pressure and velocity sensitive pads, sixteen rotary encoders, transport and preset controls with sixteen presets, and a jogwheel for transpose, rate, and level.
When placed in controller mode, the pads illuminate red via backlit LEDs. In this mode, a performer can use the pads and rotary encoder knobs to control drum software on an iPad (with camera connector kit) or a computer such as BFD, Kontakt, Ableton Live's Drum Rack, EZ Drummer, Addictive Drums, Reason Kong, or Geist. The controller can also be used to trigger clips or tracks in production and DJ software such as Ableton Live, Traktor, and Serato. Designed to be as flexible as a modular synthesizer, the MatrixBrute from Arturia is a 100% analog synthesizer that features a 16x16 modulation matrix, 64-step sequencer, and 256 patch memories. The sound engine boasts three analog oscillators with a sub oscillator on oscillators one and two. Additionally, oscillator three doubles as an LFO and can be used as an audio source simultaneously. The noise generator offers white, pink, red and blue noise types.
All oscillators, noise source, and external input are blended in the mixer section before routing to the filters. The multi-mode Steiner-Parker filter and the traditional multi-mode ladder filter can be configured in either series or parallel. The synth also includes two additional LFOs with seven waveforms each and three envelope generators with ADSR capabilities on the first two. The PolyBrute's architecture starts with two Brute waveshaping oscillators capable of a wide pallet of timbral versatility. Both oscillators generate three basic waveforms (sawtooth, triangle, and square with pulse-width control), which can be mixed creating unusual and harmonically rich tones. Anything can be created from airy pads to snarling bass riffs. VCO2 also includes a sine wave sub-oscillator that runs an octave below the fundamental pitch. There are various FM capabilities as well as hard- and soft-sync options creating even more dynamically diverse tones. Additionally, a noise generator can be added to the mix and features a knob for dialing any color from red noise with its darker rumble to white noise with its crisp, multispectral character.
The filter section sports a continuously variable 12 dB Steiner Parker filter with low-pass, high-pass, and bandpass, and a classic 24 dB low-pass ladder filter with gain compensation, which prevents the reduction of lower frequencies that accompany higher resonance levels. Filter 1 includes the famous Arturia Brute Factor feedback filter for warming up the low end and producing monster growls, while the distortion circuit of Filter 2 controls the ladder filter's feed into the VCA.
