With its grille on, the R-121SW isn’t a very distinctive subwoofer. That isn’t to say it looks bad at all but rather it is a fairly routine black box like many other subs. It uses a black vinyl faux wood grain finish that can be seen in many other speakers and subs in this class. What is nice is that it is a fingerprint-resistant finish, unlike many satin or gloss finishes. All of the edges are hard angles and there is no edge rounding, so the cabinet doesn’t make much effort in hiding its boxiness. It disappears easily into a room corner for those who do not want something that attracts much attention. What helps in this respect is that it is on the smaller side of 12” ported subs, and it’s not a large subwoofer by most people’s standards, although it certainly wouldn’t be considered tiny either. It is only when the grille is removed that the sub visually separates itself from competitors. Removing the grille unveils Klipsch’s trademarked copper cone. To me, the copper cone design of Klipsch has always added a touch of class. Removing the grille also exposes a front-mounted LED power indicator that lets you know the sub’s power state. The XPRS1182S features a 4000W peak Class-D amplifier that drives the single 18" low-frequency woofer to offer a frequency response of 40 to 120 Hz with a max SPL of 130 dB. The rear panel offers two combo XLR-1/4" inputs and two XLR through outputs for connecting to other speakers and subwoofers. Quick DSP adjustments are available and include three modes: Boost, Extended LF, and Normal. Additionally, there are three preset crossover settings including 80, 100, and 120 Hz. The phase switch offers a choice of 0 or 180° to prevent multiple subwoofers from cancelling each other's low frequencies. The PreSonus Eris Sub8 is a compact, powered studio subwoofer designed to work with any set of studio monitors, especially the PreSonus Eris E3.5 or E4.5 full-range studio monitors.
A 100W Class-AB amplifier powers the front-firing 8" paper-composite woofer, which offers a frequency response of 200 Hz down to 30 Hz with a respectable 113 dB peak SPL. The rear panel features a pair of 1/4" and RCA inputs as well as 1/4" and RCA thru/outputs. A variable input gain knob (-30 to +6 dB) and a continuously variable lowpass filter (50 to 130 Hz) helps you dial in the volume and low-frequency sweet spot. Additionally, a defeatable highpass filter removes frequency content below 80 Hz from the full-range signal sent from the Eris Sub8 output to the main speakers.
Other notable features include a polarity-invert switch and protection circuits for RF interference, output-current limiting, over-temperature, turn on/off transient, subsonic filter, and an external mains fuse. The Eris Sub8 ships with a power cord.
